Robert Emerson

Robert Emerson is a 1973 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School. He then attended Dickinson College where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, German Language. Robert returned to the local area for 6 years, serving the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, the Baker Mansion Museum and at Fort Roberdeau, where he continues to volunteer occasionally.

Robert’s career then took him to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Lancaster, PA where he acted as Director for 14 years. During his tenure, he raised nearly five million dollars for major building expansion, artifact restorations and annual operating support. Museum membership was expanded by 900 members, aiding in the growth of the Museum. Robert also planned and implemented many programs and events to be enjoyed by patrons and members.

Robert is currently the Executive Director of the Old Fort Niagra Association and has overseen the management and growth of the 22 acre historic site, Old Fort Niagra, in Youngstown NY. From fundraising for a new visitor center, to state of the art communication and security systems, to many structural and site improvements, Robert has continued to improve the site while preserving history. There was even a nationally broadcast PBS documentary.

Robert’s passion for history led him to pen the book “Allegheny Passage: An Illustrated History of Blair County, Pennsylvania”. He also authored two entries in the Dictionary of American Biography, numerous historical artiles about 18th century military and 19th century industrial history and, most recently, an article in the Western New York Heritage Magazine on Le Magazin Royal, a French trading post in Lewiston NY.

In July of 2022, all of Robert’s accomplishments and successes resulted in his being named a member of the Order National du Merite, or the National Order of Merit, for his work in keeping French history alive in Western New York through the former military fort. He was bestowed the rank of chevalier, or knight. Read the article in the Niagara Gazette here.

In his free time, Robert enjoys bicyling around 20 miles each day, engaging in historical reenactments and conducting historical research.
