Mrs. Judy Ward – Class of 1977. Judy is a Registered Nurse, as well as a former small business owner, development professional and wellness coordinator for Ward Transport and Logistics. Judy was elected to represent residents of Blair, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton and Huntingdon counties in the Pennsylvania Senate on November 6, 2018 after serving two terms representing the interests of local communities in the House of Representatives. Her primary goals, upon being elected to office, are to seek public pension reform, improve Pennsylvania’s business climate and to advance economic and agricultural opportunities for the 30th District.
Judy and Bill have two grown sons, Bill Jr. and Adam who both live in Hollidaysburg and work at the family business, Ward Transport & Logistics. Bill Jr., Adam as well as their cousins, David and James, represent the 4th generation of Wards working at the company.
Judy has two sisters, Ann Farrell (HAHS ’79) and Renee Farrell Donovan (HAHS ’80). Their mother lives in the family home and is working towards the goal of a centenarian.
Mr. Fred Marschak – Class of 1963. After graduation Fred attended Penn State Altoona, graduating from the Main Campus in 1966. In 1967, he married his wonderful wife, Nancy. Fred spent 9 years in Hollidaysburg as Planetarium Director where he was named “Outstanding Secondary Educator in America” in 1975. In 1977, Fred & Nancy moved to Santa Barbara, CA. For the next 38 years he worked his way from Astronomy Lab Instructor to Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Santa Barbara City College. In the late 70’s and early 80’s he earned two Master’s Degrees at the University of CA in Santa Barbara. He created the astronomy lab at SBCC which now serves 800 students per year and he grew the astronomy lecture classes from 30 students to about 2000. Fred was awarded the “SBCC Faculty Excellence Award” and was honored by having a new 20” research grade telescope named after him at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. After 48 years of teaching, Fred (and Nancy) have retired to Homewood at Martinsburg. He still lectures regularly at Homewood, the Hollidaysburg Library, scouts, schools and other groups. He is currently volunteering with the Hollidaysburg High School Planetarium.
Mr. Sam Dunkle – Class of 1955. After high school Sam attended Penn State University where he graduated in 1960. He was hired in the Hollidaysburg Area School District by Griff Jones in the fall of 1960 to teach Math and Science. He also taught conservation and oceanography courses. He was also a Student Council Advisor. In 1973 he began his role as the Assistant to the Principal for discipline. He married Wanda in 1959, they will celebrate 60 years in June. Sam retired from the district in 1993. Sam also served over 40 years in the Pennsylvania Game Commission, 8 of those being the commissioner and the president from his area. He was also part owner in a couple different construction companies.
Sam and his wife live in Duncansville. Sam and Wanda have one child, Sam. Sam and his wife Cindy live in Hollidaysburg. Sam and Cindy’s son Joshua is a freshman at Millersville University.
